1. Volunteering as a Big Brother is only for college students.

Big Brothers must be a minimum of 19 years of age, but there is no maximum age to Relive the Fun and Rewrite his Future!

2. Big Brothers are men with lots of extra time on their hands.

Not true!

For as little as one hour a week, you can add happiness to the life of your Little Brother.

3. Only a "perfect person" can be a Big Brother.

Not true!

You are not excluded from becoming a Big Brother if you smoke, socially drink alcohol or even dance the Hustle.

4. A Big Brother is asked to meet consistently with his Little Brother.

Not true!

Big Brothers are asked to meet consistently with their Little Brother, but vacations and occasional "busy times" are expected.

5. Big Brothers must have lots of money for gifts and activities.

Not true!

The friendship between a Big Brother and his Little Brother is not about gifts and expensive activities. An activity guide, community discounts and group activities are provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

6. Being a Big Brother is like becoming a Dad.

Not true!

The role of a Big Brother is to be your Little Brother's friend. You are asked to be a responsible adult and keep your Little Brother safe during your visits.

7. Big Brothers must be academic scholars and very athletic.

Not true!

You are not required to help with homework or teach your Little Brother about sports. You will be asked your interests during the interview and matched with a Little Brother with the same interests. There are no specific activities required!

8. The application process is difficult and time consuming.

Not true!

It's easy! Simply fill out the online inquiry or call 446-2227 to apply over the phone. You will then be asked to schedule your two-hour interview and training meeting plus fill out a couple easy forms for references and background checks.

9. There is a long training process and lots of meetings are required.

Not true!

The training session is combined with your initial interview! Your case manager will contact you after you're matched with a decreasing follow-up schedule.

10. Once you are matched with a child, you are on your own.

Not true!

You will be assigned a case manager who will provide you with "on call" support during your entire volunteer experience as a Big Brother.
